kWh to miles converter for EVs
Turn kilowatt-hours into miles or kilometres with your own efficiency, and see that efficiency in every common unit.
Miles = kWh × efficiency in miles per kWh. A 60 kWh battery at 3.5 mi/kWh gives 60 × 3.5 = 210 miles, which is 338 km. There is no single conversion: it depends on how efficient your car is.
Any amount of energy, in kWh: a battery, a charge, a trip.

Your efficiency in every unit
See the math, step by step
- Distance: 60 kWh × 3.5 mi/kWh = 210 mi.
- Trip energy: 520 mi ÷ 3.5 mi/kWh = 148.6 kWh.
- 1 mile = 1.609344 km exactly (NIST), used for every mile-and-kilometre conversion.
This is arithmetic on the numbers you type, not a route planner or a promise: real trips change with speed, weather, hills and the charger you find. Nothing you type leaves this device.
How to convert kWh to miles, and efficiency units
Four formulas cover everything on this page.
An electric car's efficiency says how much distance one kilowatt-hour buys. The most common ways to write it are miles per kWh (mi/kWh), watt-hours per mile (Wh/mi), kilometres per kWh (km/kWh) and kWh per 100 km. They carry the same information, and the conversions are simple:
- Distance = kWh × efficiency in distance per kWh. 60 kWh × 3.5 mi/kWh = 210 miles.
- mi/kWh to Wh/mi: 1000 ÷ mi/kWh. 4 mi/kWh = 250 Wh/mi. The reverse is the same division.
- mi/kWh to km/kWh: × 1.609344. 4 mi/kWh = 6.437 km/kWh.
- km/kWh to kWh/100 km: 100 ÷ km/kWh. 6.437 km/kWh = 15.53 kWh/100 km.
For mpg-style numbers: not confirmed MPGe needs the energy content of a gallon of gasoline in kWh, and we did not open an official source for it, so this site does not convert MPGe.
- 300 Wh/mi ÷ 1000 = 0.3 kWh per mile, so efficiency is 1 ÷ 0.3 = 3.33 mi/kWh.
- 77 kWh × 3.33 mi/kWh = 256.7 miles, or 413 km.
- In metric: 3.33 × 1.609344 = 5.36 km/kWh, and 100 ÷ 5.364 = 18.6 kWh/100 km.

What to do with the number
Once you know how far a kWh takes you, the useful questions are how many stops a trip needs, which the EV road trip charging calculator answers, and what the energy costs, which the charging cost calculator answers. Real efficiency changes with speed, temperature and load, so test your number against a trip you have already done.
Frequently asked questions
How many miles do I get from one kWh?
Multiply the kWh by your efficiency in miles per kWh. At 3.5 mi/kWh, 1 kWh gives 3.5 miles and a 60 kWh battery gives 210 miles. Use your own efficiency: there is no single figure, because it depends on the car, speed, weather and load.
How do I convert mi/kWh to Wh/mi?
Divide 1000 by the number: 4 mi/kWh is 1000 ÷ 4 = 250 Wh/mi. The same formula converts back, so 250 Wh/mi is 4 mi/kWh. Higher mi/kWh is better; for Wh/mi and kWh/100 km, lower is better.
How do I convert mi/kWh to kWh/100 km?
Multiply by 1.609344 to get km per kWh, then divide 100 by that: 4 mi/kWh is 6.437 km/kWh, which is 100 ÷ 6.437 = 15.53 kWh/100 km.
How many kWh do I need for a trip?
Divide the distance by your efficiency in the same distance unit per kWh. A 300-mile trip at 3 mi/kWh needs 100 kWh. That is more than most batteries hold, which is why the planner adds charging stops.
What about MPGe?
MPGe needs the energy content of a gallon of gasoline expressed in kWh. We did not open an official source for that figure in this edition, so this page does not convert MPGe and marks it "not confirmed".
